China shines at start of Beijing international boxing tournament
BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese team earned a flying start in the first day of the Beijing international boxing invitation tournament here on Saturday with a quarterfinal berth in the 51kg category.
Li Jinbao won a landslide victory against Kalucza Norbert from Hungary as the coach of the latter admitted defeat before the fourth round concluded.
The 16-year-old Chinese young man said it was his best performance so far and "I was just fighting as the coach told."
He beat the Hungarian boxer at 7-3, 11-4 and 9-6 in the first three rounds.
Avila Braulio from Mexico, Kumar Jitender from India, Sattibayev Olzhas from Kazakhstan, Butdee Chatchai from Thailand, Liu Shih-Jung from Chinese Taipei, Butler Paul Michael from Britain and Cesar Dave from Seychelles also entered the quarterfinals of the 51 kg category.
The Beijing international boxing invitational tournament kicked off at Beijing's Worker's Indoor Arena (BWIA) on Saturday, as one of a series of test events for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. More than 70 boxers from 17 countries and regions, including 12 from the Chinese mainland, participated in the tournament.
The tournament is sponsored by Chinese Boxing Federation. The direct elimination system is applied, and there will be a total of 70 bouts, including preliminaries, semifinals and finals.
BWIA, renovated in 2006, will be the Olympic boxing and Paralympic judo competitions in 2008.
Good Luck Beijing Sports Events serve as a warm-up and rehearsal prior to the 2008 Olympic Games. Beginning from July this year and May next year, over 10,000 athletes from various countries and regions will come to Beijing to participate in 42 sports events.
