Chinese boxer Zhang Zhilei withdraws from semifinals of Olympic test event
BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese boxer Zhang Zhilei withdrew from the semifinals of the +91 kg (super heavy) category due to shoulder injuries here on Wednesday at Beijing international boxing invitational tournament.
Zhang failed to appear for weigh-in, according to a senior official of China's governing body of the sports.
"The team decided to withdraw Zhang from the event to ensure no more injuries in his shoulder," said Chang Jianping, president of Chinese Boxing Federation.
With Zhang's withdrawal, Denis Sergeev from Russia will compete in Thursday's final with a walkover.
The 24-year-old beat Anders Ruiz of Mexico 28-9 on Monday to reach the semifinals on Wednesday as the only athlete of the Chinese team having survived the quarters.
Zhang won a bronze at the World Championships in Chicago, which qualifies him for the 2008 Olympic Games.
